Sockprints Spotlight: Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Socks

This is an image of a pair of pink Breast Cancer Awareness socks with the pink ribbon symbol and the words "Love Life Hope."

What better way to kick off the month of October than with comfy sweaters, thick blankets, and everything Halloween-related. Though these symbols are reminiscent of all things fall, fun, and festive, October brings one more important icon to the table, the Pink Ribbon. That’s right - it’s time to “think pink” because this month’s Sockprints Spotlight is all about our Breast Cancer Awareness personalized socks!

What is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is an annual international campaign put on by multiple breast cancer awareness organizations. This national effort aims to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research through a variety of creative campaigns.

Founded in October of 1985, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was originally created by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries’ Pharmaceutical Division, a producer of anti-breast cancer drugs, as a way to promote early detection through the medical practice of mammography.

Nowadays, support has grown tremendously, resulting in multiple small and large organizations. A variety of platforms continuously advocate for the cause by providing help through early detection, education, and support services. Some high-esteemed organizations include the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, American Breast Cancer Foundation, and more.

How to Get Involved

Why "think pink?" Simply put, because “no one should face breast cancer alone.” There are tons of ways to get involved from donating to fundraising to wearing that bright pink ribbon. Even having a conversation with friends about breast cancer is a step toward progress, awareness, and prevention.

Another way to get involved is by supporting the organizations that fight for the cause. One renowned organization, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure ®, hosts nationwide health-based fitness walks and 5K runs to raise funds and spread awareness for the movement. On the other hand, the National Breast Cancer Foundation offers fundraising through virtual efforts. In their creative campaign, VRace (Virtual Race), the race is virtual, but the impact is real.

Whether you are a hardcore advocate or word-of-mouth supporter, every action to help spread the word is a step toward progress. As the official month for National Breast Cancer Awareness winds down, don't forget to show support and "think pink!"
