Mahjong Nights, Good Company, and a Little Creative Fun

A few months ago, I said yes to something new: Mahjong night.

I’ll be honest—when I was invited, I didn’t totally know what I was getting into. The tiles, the rules, the terminology… it all felt a little intimidating at first. But I knew I was in great company with my besties and thought I’d give it a shot. After a couple of games—and a ton of questions and mistakes—I was secretly hooked. I didn’t tell anyone at the time, but as soon as I got home, I downloaded a Mahjong app on my phone so I could learn more. Yes… there I go down another rabbit hole. This time, it’s Mahjong.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I got added to the Mahjong text thread and received another invite to play.

Here’s how it works: once a month or so, our hostess extraordinaire and Mahjong guru (shoutout to Helen) throws out a date in the group text to gather and play. If I’m in town, I’m in—no question about it. There’s still so much to learn, and our evenings together have been so enjoyable. Helen goes overboard with dinner, and the rest of us show up ready to play, catch up, drink wine, and laugh. There’s focus on the game, for sure, but there’s nothing like being together with good friends and having an easy excuse to get together.

Mahjong Is Having a Moment

If it feels like Mahjong is suddenly everywhere, you’re not imagining it.

More and more of us are rediscovering—or discovering for the first time, like me—how great it feels to gather around a table with something engaging and challenging in front of you. Mahjong hits that sweet spot: mentally stimulating without being too stressful, social without the pressure.

Some players grew up watching their moms or grandmothers play. Others are learning tile by tile, hand by hand, like me. But no matter how you find your way to Mahjong, the reasons we love it tend to look the same; meaningful time with friends, a reason to gather regularly, and a new little hobby that rewards patience, practice, and a little luck.

Around our table, the conversation flows just as easily as the game. We catch up on life and work, talk about travel, kids and pets, and—more and more—check in on our parents as they get older. Sometimes that means swapping funny stories from visits to the memory care facility and sometimes sharing updates about health or other challenges.

And as I’ve gotten older myself, I’ve started paying more attention to the things that keep both my heart and my mind engaged. I was so happy and comf

orted to learn that Mahjong has been linked to slower cognitive decline and improved mental function! I love it. A game that keeps us thinking, laughing, and coming back to the table together? I’ll take that.

It’s no wonder Mahjong nights are popping up everywhere.

Around the same time Mahjong found its way into my life, I noticed it showing up in other places too. Jann, my business partner and co-founder of Sockprints, mentioned that her sister had started taking Mahjong lessons and was really getting into it. I wasn’t surprised at all. That seems to be how Mahjong works—it sneaks into your life through different doors and feels surprisingly easy to love.

Jann, being Jann, naturally started playing around with Mahjong-inspired designs. Since we’re always on the lookout for fresh sock ideas, this one just made sense. She designed our Mahjong no-show socks to be fun and perfect for people who love the game. They’re not loud or over-the-top—just a small, thoughtful nod to Mahjong nights, inside jokes, and the friends who gather around the table. And probably no surprise to anyone, our Mahjong group was the first to get a sneak-peek gift pair at our December holiday game.

Everyone loved their socks. A couple of the women put them on right away to warm their toes—and that’s when I knew we were onto a good thing.

That kind of response is always the best kind. It didn’t feel like a product launch—it felt like something that genuinely resonated with people who already loved the game.

We added the Mahjong no-show socks to our Etsy shop first, and before long, Mahjong lovers started finding them too—ordering them as gifts for others and, let’s be honest, for themselves.

If you’re curious, you can now find our Mahjong no-show socks on sockprints.com—the same cozy pairs, just another place to find them. And if there’s a Mahjong detail or inside joke you’d love to see on a future pair, we’d genuinely love to hear it.
